GOODS FROM THE WOODS!

Looking for a Unique idea for storing firewood?

Dan

We first met Dan when we hired him to help us take down a medium walnut tree a few weeks prior to this Job. It was a job that was a little more than we could handle with our limited experience at this time. We were in the middle of the job and Dan came to help on a moments notice Dan did an excellent job. It was not a hard take down, just a little tricky, but one that gave us a chance to see that Dan had the skills for much harder jobs. Little did we expect to need those skills so soon on this job.

One week later we took on a job to remove a large maple that hung over the house of the resident and a neighbor. A limb had fallen off the tree and damaged the neighbors roof. Another tree company had removed the branch from the neighbor's roof as well as a medium tree in the front yard and the fence between the two houses. It was the middle of the winter and subzero weather. I guess the intent was to use the bucket truck to take down the tree. However, i seemed more practical to use a climber since the tree was so spread out.

It was also very close to an 8,000 volt high power main line across the back of the property.

Dan is an "ex-swabby" in the navy and is used to hanging over the side of a ship on ropes. His knots and angles are excellent and his maneuvering in the tree is more like on a Navy ship than an arborist in a tree, but hey it works! Dan placed the ropes, tied off the ends and made the cuts and as they fell the tips would barely graze the edge of the roof line.

Not a limb hit a roof, fence or wire. It was a flawless job, hats off to Dan!!!

Cutting

Dan has set the lowering line (red rope - white arrow) on the branch he is cutting at a key point. It is set so as the branch falls it wiil swing away from the house (and Dan) yet not scrap the roof.

Tight Location

The tree is located behind the house and tight to the neighbor's house. To the left about 50 ft behind the tree is a high voltage power line.

Port-A-Wrap

Aaron is using the port-a-wrap tied to the base of the tree (red arrow) to lower the branch (white arrow). The lowering line is run through a crotch above the area where Dan is working to control the movement of the branch away from the house when it releases from the tree.

Taken A Break

This series of pictures is taken half way through the take down. We have already taken the left side of the tree down where the power lines are. Pictures are taken from the roof of the house.

Spider Dan

Dan seems to enjoy getting up into the tops of the small branches of the trees, then he swings them up and down. Not this little piggy! I'd break em off long before I was that far up!

Stop Dan Stop!

No he didn't. He kept going to the crotch above his head.

Next Cut

Dan has the next branch tied off (above his head) and is making a notch to guide the branch to fall toward the camera.

Lowering

The branch has been released from the tree and MISSED THE ROOF! Because of the placement of the rope in the crotch it is swung away from the house and can be safely lowered to the ground by Aaron.

One Person Crew

Using the port-a-wrap one person can "shock load" and lower heavy wood and branches. Then maneuver the wood to the desired landing area holding the rope with one hand.

Next Cut

Moving into position and setting up the lines for the next cut. This one will be a bigger log.

NEXT CUT

Moving into position and setting up the lines for the next cut. This one will be a bigger log.

CUTTING

Dan is cutting the next log, a bigger cut. Notice the lowering rope is tied through a crotch high to the left. this insures the log will swing away from Dan when it releases.

GONE

The cut is complete and you can just see the log leaving the frame to the bottom left.... safely away from Dan and on the way to a safe landing. This takes teamwork with Aaron on the port-a-wrap to allow the log to "fall" under control and make sure it does not swing back into the cutter

GOING UP

Moving to the center of the tree to take out the tops

In The Middle

Working on the middle of the tree

Never Disapoints

Dan never fails to make me nervous. I know after watching him he has tied himself in and will not get hurt, but it still looks unnatural to me!

Set up

Setting up the next cut

Double Cutters

Aaron and Dan both working the lower part of the tree. Once the top is out of it a ground crew was not needed so both climber entered the tree as Aaron needed some On The Job Training from Dan.

Another Leg

This tree had a bunch of legs like an octopus seemed like we would never get done cutting the branches and logs down.

Dan Davis

Dan Davis on a break. Dan's trade mark SEAT BELT flip line. That's right, a seat belt ... from a car. You have to buckle up for safety you know!

Rope Toss

Dan tossing the rope to tie-off with. Either to tie the branch to lower with, use as a crane or as a safety line for his 3-point system.

Almost There

Getting it down to the last couple of cuts.
