GOODS FROM THE WOODS!

Looking for a Unique idea for storing firewood?

Dale and Suzanne

Dale and Suzanne are good friends of ours and own a tree farm North of Rochester by Mazeppa where they plan to some day build a house and retire. They wanted to harvest one of their double Walnut trees to provide lumber for building a dinning room table and other furniture items. They wanted to do this job in the winter when the wood was free of water. They are also very concerned of the saplings growing under the tree. So being good friends, this job was one that fell to us to do.

The trees were just inside the wood line about a half mile back into the tree farm. The road was up a steep slope then across the field and up and down a couple of other hills to reach the job site. Needless to say we could not get the bucket truck back into this area and needed to climb the tree. We had enough trouble just getting the MultiTrac and a tractor with trailer back into the area with ice and snow on the road.

Once we had the tree down we needed to carefully retrieve the logs out of the woods without damage to the saplings and haul them back to the main road. We needed to make a couple of trips to get all the logs out. Once we had all the logs we  delivered them to a local mill. As the day went on the road got worse to drive on and he last trip we almost did not get out. This was an interesting and fun job!

GETTING STARTED

Taking the limbs off starting at the bottom going up.

LANDING ZONE

Branches were cut so they fell into two landing zones missing in the foreground missing some young trees on the far side and to the right of the tree.

ANOTHER LIMB

Working around the tree then up, one limb at a time.

GOING UP

Resetting and climbing up to cut the next level of branches.

SECOND TREE

This tree seems to have a set of legs at the top!

ROPE EM

These tops required a rope to pull them into the landing zone directly over the top of the camera view.

TRICKY CUTS

When a large branch is cut the release of weight will cause the tree and remaining branch to swing violently. Hanging on (sometimes in an awkward position like this) is sometimes hard. That's why you are tied in!

HALF WAY DOWN

Half way down but still a long way up the tree.

BIG WOOD

Brush is off and big wood is com'in down.

WOODPECKER

Once the limbs are off the rest of the "stalk" is "chunked" until it reaches a lenght where the logs can be obtained.

LAST CUT

Last cut just above the length of the logs

COM'IN DOWN

Exiting the tree, cleanup the work area and drop the stalks

TWIN STALKS

Both stalks are ready to fell. Without the limbs they will fell without hanging up and without nearly as much damage to the surrounding trees or to the Walnut logs.

FELLING

Cutting the notch to fell the first log.

FINISH THE TOP CUT

Top cut of the notch is complet.

LITTLE "HELP"

Dale pretending to help!

CLEARING BRUSH

Clearing the brush away to allow access to the logs for removal.

4 LOGS

Four logs... two in the back and two in the forground.

STUMP

View from the stump showing the logs and MultiTrac.

THE OTHER DIRECTION

Looking the other direction from the stump you can see the other two logs laying end to end.

TO THE MILL

With the logs out of the woods we then hauled them to the road to load them into the big trailer.

OVER THE HILL

We took 3 logs first one in the MultiTrac and two on the trailer (pulled by Dales tractor) since the road was to rough, full of snow and steep to get the big trucks back into.

LEAVING THE MEADOW

From the meadow we entered the access road that lead out to the main road where the truck was parked.... about a half mile.

PROBLEM POINT

This was the problem with taking the trucks back in here. It also proved to be the problem with Dales Tractor. The MultiTrac was the only thing that made it up the hill with the logs. We use the MultiTrac to carry the rest of the logs from the woods to the road and loaded all of them into the big trailer and hauled them to the mill.

THE MILL

At the mill the logs were unloaded and left to be sawed into lumber and dried. The process will take several months.
